Agricultural and Livelihood Resilience

under a Changing Climate

As the world’s lowest-lying country, Maldives is highly vulnerable to climate and disaster risks such as sea level rise. To mitigate these risks, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has launched the Agriculture and Livelihood Resilience Project. In 2021, it tasked Resilient Coasts with leadership of a team of its’ national consultants. As a result of this collaboration, a Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment was produced, comprising a suite of potential innovative interventions for the ADB to consider.

Resilient Coasts were approached by the ADB to develop an investigative approach to outline potential climate change adaptation projects within the Maldives. As the world’s lowest-lying country, Maldives is highly vulnerable to climate and disaster risks such as storm damage and sea level rise. The brief was to design and conceptualize opportunities for climate financing with a focus on climate change, natural resources and resilience-focused initiatives. We utilized our strengths in systems-based complex thinking to identify opportunities to support and scale-up the agriculture value chain and small-holder livelihoods.

Resilient Coasts led a team of national consultants to produce a Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment, which will inform the Agricultural and Livelihood Resilience project. Our team undertook a detailed sector and country assessment; a review of historic and future climate trends and impacts; development of a climate change vulnerability profile and presented innovative potential adaptation interventions.
